JGLS STUDENT COUNCIL 2014-15

Committee Report for Semester A, 2014-15.

 

The Housing Committee held two meetings in the last semester. We tried to begin with some lighter but important issues. The agenda of the first meeting was wardens. The core ingredients were to be clear in policies regarding the role and authority of the wardens. The various problems related in obtaining gate passes and unavailability of the wardens at times were dealt with. The problem of some wardens still not equipped with the ssp system was also discussed. Contact numbers of wardens were circulated throughout the hostels which was a part of this agenda. Much more would be taken up on this in the coming semester. A meeting with the wardens including the head warden is yet to take place which will initiate much of our thought plans.

 

The second meeting exclusively was focused on having a meeting with the wardens to develop a plan of action regarding various policies including one of leaving luggage’s behind during vacations.  Unfortunately, the meeting couldn’t be conducted. However, Punkhuri, Vice President, handled this issue for this semester. A policy statement with luggage storage plans for each block was circulated before the vacations. In the coming semester, we will finalize and make recommendations to make this policy more student friendly.

 

We also dealt with the Sodexo house cleaning facilities and their poor management we faced throughout the last semester. The number of Sodexo workers, their allocation in different blocks, their work timings, and their availability is something which needs to be discussed and talked upon at the higher level. This was brought up by the Student Council in their meeting with the HODs and also with the COO of Sodexo. By next semester, house keeping staff in the second shift will be increased. In addition to this, the shift timings may be slightly altered so that house keeping staff in available in the evening, when most students are free. This is a matter which will require talks at the higher level and we like to support our point with a survey which we plan to conduct as we come back. This survey will stress on the requirement of increased workforce in the hostels for the better functioning.

 

The major goals set up in the last semester are in their initial stages of implementation and will soon take the form of a policy or will be implemented in the coming semester. Coming semester, we are planning to take up larger issues which will make the accomodation in JGLS more enjoyable and comfortable.
