COMPOSITION OF THE STUDENT COUNCIL

5. Membership to the Student Council

The members of the Student Council shall consist of democratically elected students of JGLS, who shall serve for a period of one academic year, comprising of two semesters (Spring and Fall), unless otherwise specified. The eligibility, qualifications and classifications for the different membership posts shall be established in this Constitution, the Schedules to this Constitution and its various codes.

6. Membership Posts

The Student Council shall in its entirety consist of the Core Members, the Class Representatives and the Batch Representatives.

(i) Core Members

The term “Core Members” refer to the members of the Student Council who are elected by all the members of Student Body during the annual JGLS Student Council General Elections.
These members shall not hold any other office during their term, in any student organization, society, committee or any other body established under this Constitution and/or affiliated to the JGLS Student Council.
A student can serve only two consecutive terms in the JGLS Student Council as a Core member.
Unless otherwise specified, core members refer to the following posts:

JGLS Student Council President (hereby referred to as the “President”)

JGLS Student Council Vice-President (hereby referred to as the “Vice-President”)

JGLS Student Council General Secretary (hereby referred to as the “General Secretary”)

JGLS Student Council Cultural Secretary (hereby referred to as the “Cultural Secretary”)

JGLS Student Council Treasurer (hereby referred to as the “Treasure”)

The elections shall be conducted as per the rules and regulations laid down in Part VI to this Constitution.

(ii) Class Representatives

Every class section of respective batches shall have their representatives in the JGLS Student Council. Each section shall have two representatives (one male and one female). However, in case the strength of a class is low (less than 10), there shall be one representative for the entire class (male or female).
Elections for Class Representatives shall be presided over by at least one Core Member or any other officer(s) as appointed by the Student Council.
Elections for Class Representatives shall be held within one week after the Annual JGLS Student Council General Elections.
Class Representatives shall be elected to one-year term, their term commencing with the new administration of the Student Council.
The elections shall be conducted as per the rules and regulations laid down in this Constitution.

(iii) Batch Representatives

Unless otherwise stated, the elected Class Representatives shall elect two Batch Representatives amongst themselves from their respective programs.

Provided if the total number of class representatives for a particular batch is less than four, they shall elect one representative.

Provided further, if the total number of class representatives for a particular program is less than four, they shall be one program representative collectively to represent in the Student Council meetings.

Explanation: This provision is to ensure that there are representatives for every program from every batch to put forward the concerns specific to a course in a particular batch. This provision has been explained in a tabular form.

Elections for Batch Representatives shall be presided over by the Core Members of the JGLS Student Council.
Elections for Batch Representatives shall be held within one week after the JGLS Student Council General Elections.
The Batch Representatives shall be elected to one-year term, their term commencing with the new administration of the JGLS Student Council.

(iv) Quorum of the Student Council

The quorum to constitute a Student Council meeting shall be five Core Members and at least two-third batch representatives, or four Core Members and at least two-third batch representatives, whichever is higher.
The attendance of the President or the Vice President is mandatory for the quorum to be present.
that where at any crucial time, there are three Core Members of the Student Council including President and Vice President, and the number of interested Batch Representatives is or above eight, there shall be a quorum.
